Representation in Films

I made a mind map on Prezi showing the representation of different social groups in "Clueless" and in "Super 8".

Learning Comments:

I've learnt that some of the things that create a representation of social groups in films include:

  • Sound- the soundtrack can suggest how the social groups act, and their personalities. It can also set the tone and atmosphere for the rest of the film, as well as identify the genre
  • Costume- the costume can show how affluent the social group is, as well as their personalities
  • Locations-  if an area is affluent, than the social group is seen equally as affluent
  • Interactions with other characters- the relationships between the same and other social groups can show how friendly/ genuine a social group is.
This representation of people in films can effect the way the audience think of them- if the character has lots of money and brag about it, like in Clueless, people may feel irritated by them or they may find their character funny. Or, if a character is young and quite poor, like in Super 8, people are more likely to feel sympathy towards them if they are in trouble or are hurt.

So, knowing this, I must cast and represent my characters in a way that will help achieve the desired effect from audiences.
